How does Essure work?
Essure was designed to support women who lead busy lives. As a result, it’s a procedure that only requires 10 minutes out of your busy schedule.
Essure can only be given by an Essure-certified doctor. The way it works is that your Essure-certified Raleigh OBGYN will slip small, soft inserts through your vaginal canal and your cervix to be implanted into your fallopian tubes as in during a tubal ligation. This process doesn’t require any incision or surgery. The tip of the implant will remain visible to the gynecologist ensuring that it has been properly placed and ready to work.
You can be sure that the Essure inserts are comfortable, because they are made of the same silicone-free materials used in heart stents. This allows your inserts to bend and flex, all while remaining comfortably in place.

What happens after the Essure inserts are in place?
Once the Essure inserts are in place, they work with your body over the course of three months to provide a natural barrier in your fallopian tubes. The barrier blocks sperm from reaching the egg after sexual intercourse, preventing unwanted pregnancies from taking place. You are advised to use a secondary form of birth control during this three month time period to prevent an accidental pregnancy from occurring.
At the conclusion of the three month Essure implantation process, you will be ready for your Essure Confirmation Test. At this time, your uterus will be injected with a dye so that it can be viewed on an x-ray. Your Raleigh OB GYN will be able to confirm that your Essure injections are in its proper place. If your Essure Confirmation Test is positive, you can be sure that your long term birth control option is in working order.
Things to think about before considering using Essure
If you think you may want to become pregnant at any time in the future, the Essure procedure may not be right for you. Similar to a tubal ligation or a vasectomy, this procedure is not reversible and should not be considered if you are not sure you may want to be pregnant during your fertile years.
